Infertility Treatments & Birth Defects

As if women who struggle to get pregnant don’t have enough on their mind, a new study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can make them even more worried: babies conceived using fertility drugs are two to four times more likely to suffer birth defects. Scientists don’t yet know whether it’s the initial infertility or the treatment itself that causes the defects.

Still, before you throw away those fertility drugs, consider this: Although the risk for birth defects is 3% among the general population, it’s only 4.5% for those women who use fertility drugs.
